Kristen Ellis and Jeff Carlin try to wrap their heads around the process of becoming a Master of Wine. Joining the discussion this week on Barell to Bottle is half of the husband-wife team behind Chasing Harvest wines and MW candidate Mike Kush. Mr. Fix-It aka Lou Manfredini shares his favorite wines for the holidays from Binny’s Beverage Depot!

Corte Seresina Pinot Grigio 2016: Lemon-green in color, aromas of key limes and white peach complement undertones of green apple. On the palate, it is smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish.

Owen Roe Abbot’s Table Red 2016: This blend out of Columbia Valley in Washington State was created in the spirit of hospitality – companionship with great food and wine. A mouth-filling blend of Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Blaufrankesh, and Malbec, the lush red fruit flavors and balanced acidity will be a perfect compliment to our traditional holiday dishes.

Guigal Cotes du Rhone 2013: Year after year, this is a trusty go-to for the Holidays and colder months in Chicago. Full, round yet racy with supple tannins. A sure crowd pleaser.

Cuvelier Los Andes Cabernet Sauvignon 2014: Argentina is often forgotten about for varieties other than Malbec. This Cab is an absolute steal for the price. Balanced structure with a ripe, lush mid-palate. A perfect reminder of how great Cab performs in Argentina.

Fossetta Prosecco NV: An excellent option for New Year’s toasts or even brunches. Light on its feet, with bright citrus, stone fruit, and green apple aromas. A solid Prosecco.

Argyle Pinot Noir 2015: This Reserve Pinot Noir is truly a celebration of balance. Sourced from vineyards on volcanic, red soils, contribute to its red cherry, rose mallow, and grilled meats. The tannins are firm, but rounded, an underlying minerality which drives the mid-palate through the long finish.

Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs NV: Translated as white wine from white grapes. This bubbly Chardonnay shows finesse and depth of being aged on the lees for over two years. Vibrant, fruitful, and crisp with a creamy mousse.

Arani Sauvignon Blanc 2016: Citrus nose with unique stone fruit character. Rich and soft on the palate with a mandarin-like ripeness balanced by the bright citrus on the nose. A ripe, fruit forward alternative to many of the Grapefruit bombs on offer from Marlborough.

Tres Lagunas Garnacha 2016: Wild strawberry and tart cherry notes fill out this impressive red, highlighted by hints of roasted nuts and framed in black pepper. Fresh and focused, with a persistent lavender finish that lingers long on the palate. Top-tier wine selling for a song.

BCBS Release – Extra Tax Charged at LP Binny’s + Your Feedback

A big thanks to everyone who headed to Binny’s this morning to stock up on today’s limited Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout release! Those who braved the lines went home with some excellent beer. And looking forward to next year, we’re listening to your feedback to make the event even better including upgrades to our register system and Lincoln Park location line process. We’d love to hear your thoughts – please email us at [email protected].

One issue we’re working to fix is incorrect tax charged on the Northwoods release. This issue only occurred at registers in our Lincoln Park Tasting Room. If you made your purchase at the front registers at our Lincoln Park location, or at any other Binny’s location, this isn’t an problem. Due to a programming error, those who purchased Northwoods at the Lincoln Park Tasting Room were charged extra soft drink and food tax. The general tax charged was correct.

Here’s what you need to do for a refund:

– If you paid credit, you will be refunded the extra tax automatically. Keep an eye on your account. Please allow around a week for processing, but your refund is coming back to you.

– If you paid cash, please bring your receipt back to your favorite Binny’s for a cash refund on the extra taxes charged. If you are unable to make it to a Binny’s, please email us at [email protected] and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

Thanks again for your patronage and feedback. We’re looking forward to an even better event next year. Cheers!
